Calculating and Understanding your GPA

Calculating and Understanding your GPA

What is a GPA?

Your GPA, or Grade Point Average, is a statistic that reflects how well you have achieved on average in your classes. During your studies, it is intended to rate you (usually on a GPA scale between 1.0 and 4.0) and show whether your overall grades have been high or poor. This number is then used to decide whether you meet the requirements and criteria laid down by the degree or university program. In other words, your Grade Point Average is a score used to measure your achievement in your degree program in the same way that your teachers and instructors award you a grade to assess your progress or success throughout their course. Throughout the course, term, and year, your average GPA is a number showing what you usually scored in your classes.

The grade point average (GPA) is calculated differently in every country and even universities as well. The GPA in Egypt differs whether you are in the FUE, AUC, GUC, MIU, BUE, and other Egyptian universities. It is a confusing process to understand all GPA systems and calculations and convert your percentage to GPA.

Here are different university GPA grades and calculations in Egypt.

  • Future University in Egypt (FUE)

  • German University in Cairo (GUC)

  • British University in Egypt (BUE)

  • American University in Egypt (AUC)

  • Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AAST)

  • Misr International University (MIU)

At the end of each semester and summer Session, you will receive a GPA based on the grades you earned in all of the courses taken during that semester. To find out how your GPA is calculated, follow these steps:

Step 1: Add the number of credit hours attached to each course—this is the total number of credit hours attempted.

Step 2: Calculate the total number of grade points earned for each course by multiplying the number of credit hours assigned to the course by the number of grade points equivalent to the letter grade received.

Step 3: Add the total number of grade points earned for all courses. This is the total number of grade points earned

Step 4: Divide the total number of grade points earned by the total number of credit hours attempted. This is your GPA calculated on a four-point scale.

Students are evaluated and graded at the end of each course. The final marks given by the instructor in percentage for all courses except research project courses will be a weighted average of the marks earned in the three areas identified below.

Attendance/Participation/Projects/Tests: 30%

Midterm Exam: 30%

Final Exam: 40%

The percentage marks for each registered student in a course will appear as a letter grade with equivalent grade points per credit on his/her transcript according to the following course grading system:

German University in Cairo (GUC) GPA Calculations:

Unlike most universities the GUC’s GPA calculations differ. Instead of it being the higher the better, the lower the GPA the better.

GUC Grading System: The GPA system used at the GUC is The European Credit Transfer System "ECTS" with 0.7 being the best grade (A+) and 5 being the worst (F). A good GPA is considered to be around 2.5. Anything above 3.7 (Probation) is considered a very bad GPA.

British University in Egypt (BUE) GPA Calculations:

The UK system of education uses a range of marks which may be different from the one you knew at school or college. This does not mean it is easier to get an A grade or pass in a BUE module. It is as difficult to get a mark of 70% in a British university as it is to get 85% in an Egyptian one. The table below shows the Egyptian and approximate equivalent to the UK marking system.

Each letter grade is assigned a value (called points):
For example an A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0

For each course you have taken, multiply the number of credits of the course by the value of each grade you received.
