How to Pick a Course To Study at University if you’re Still Undecided

Not knowing what you want to study is a nerve racking feeling, when months keep passing by and you’re losing time and you still can’t decide what you want to do. We know that feeling, and we’ve got you. Choosing a university major is not the end of the world, and it isn't as scary as it seems, in fact, it is a phase that helps you understand so much more about yourself. If you need help making up your mind, here are a few tips that can guide you through this phase.

  1. Consider your abilities, passions, and interests.

The first thing to consider when you start your search for majors is your abilities, talents, and interests. Think of what you enjoy doing and if you can turn that into a career. If you specifically enjoy reading about politics, maybe consider political science, or if you love animals you can think of veterinary medicine, for example. You should also consider your talents, if you can act, sing, draw, if you have a passion for fashion designing, these are all things that you should also keep in mind when choosing a major, it is always best that you choose a major that you actually love and are passionate about.

  1. Take a moment to think of what it is that you are looking for in your major.

Are you looking for something more creative and dynamic, or are you more interested in scientific majors? Are you the kind of person who can spend so many hours studying or do you enjoy projects and practical learning more? You should ask yourself these questions as they will make deciding a little bit easier. If you love science and are willing to spend most of your time studying, then you can consider things like medicine, pharmacy, engineering, etc. If you are looking for more creative majors you can consider applied arts, architecture, interior designing, etc. If you are looking for something a little bit of both, something that isn’t as hard as scientific majors but not all projects and creativity, you can consider majors such as literature, languages, history, etc.

  1. Make a list of the majors you are considering.

Now that you know what it is you’re looking for and pointed out the things you are interested in and passionate about, you can now make a list of the majors you think suit you best. Divide your paper into two sides; on one side, write down all your abilities, interests, and talents, and on the other, write down everything you are looking for in a major, “easy” “fun” “creative” “scientific” “mathematical” “art related” “serves humanity” can all be things on your list, write down as many things as you like as long as they all accurately represent what you actually want to be doing. Once you do that, you will find multiple majors that combine most of what you wrote in your list, when you see it all laid out in front of you, you will realise all the potential majors that suit you, sp make sure to write them all down.

  1.  After you write down your choices, RESEARCH!

The most important step is to do your research on all your choices. Some questions you might want to ask yourself and research about “what career options are available for (major)?”, “Do (major) jobs pay well?”, “what universities offer the best (major) programs?”, “what subjects are taught in (major)?”. All of these are important things to know before you decide on a major. Do not forget that every major has its pros and cons, but you must be aware of them before you pick so you’re not surprised when university starts. You must also be aware of the curriculums taught by each university because some universities offer programs and majors that aren’t taught in others, so make sure to do your research properly to choose the major and university that are best for you.

  1. Talk to people.

An essential part in your search for the right major is to actually talk to people who studied these majors. People will be more helpful to you than the internet ever will be, they will have had the full experience and will answer all your questions that google might not have the answers to. They will also be able to give you tips on how to ace your studies in that major and will be honest with you about the nature of the major and its career field.

  1. Lastly, what do you see yourself doing in the future?

Now that you have done your research on each major you have considered, which of them do you actually see yourself doing in the future? What careers captured you the most? What do you think best fits your personality and your abilities? The final decision is yours, and only you can tell what feels right for you, which is kind of a superpower if you think about it, that this is the one thing no one can do but you! Take your time to think and to decide, this is not an overnight decision, you are allowed to have some time to think and weigh your options, and remember, this is not the end of the world. Good luck!
