How to Create the Perfect Resume for Your Dream Job

A resume is a document written by you that summarizes your skills, accomplishments, education, etc. Building the perfect resume is an essential to landing the job of your dreams, it’s the first thing an employer reads about you, so it has to be outstanding to convince the employer to give you a chance and get you an interview. In this article we’ll walk you through writing the perfect resume for your dream job.

The above picture is a representation of how a professional resume should look like. First , let’s tackle what you should add in your resume.

  1. Name, contact number, email address, city and country.

  2. University, major and minor, and higher education, if any. (If you are a student, you should also add your anticipated graduation date)

  3. Previous job experience including any extracurricular activities and internships (include the time frame in which you worked in these places).

  4. Qualifications and skills.

  5. Languages - your mother tongue and any other languages you speak.

The most important sections in your CV will be your previous experience and qualifications and skills, so you must add everything that is relevant to the job you are applying for in your CV, no matter how little it may be.

In your previous experience, you want to add the accomplishments you have achieved in your previous jobs, for example: “Increased sales by 10% in my previous job as a sales manager at ABC company”. You can briefly mention your responsibilities in these roles as well, and mention any promotions or certificates you received in your previous jobs.

In the skills area, you should add every single skill you have, these can either be academic skills such as research, photoshop, excel, etc, or personal skills such as communication, presentation, negotiation, and teamwork. Another thing to add is how you gained these skills, this is not mandatory but it looks really good on resumes, for example: “Leadership skills acquired through my role as a sales manager”. You can also rate your skills on a scale from one to five, depending on the format of your resume.

What you shouldn’t add on your resume.

Now that we know what to add and what is important, let’s mention the things NOT to add on your resume.

  1. Any personal information. You shouldn’t add your age, religion, sexual orientation, etc. Additionally, when adding your address, you want to make sure you are not adding your fully detailed address, just your city and country.

  2. Your GPA - especially if you have a low GPA.

  3. Irrelevant work experience.

  4. Hobbies - make sure you veer away from writing anything like “swimming, reading, football” on your resume.

  5. Salary expectations or previous salaries.

  6. False information. Do not lie on your resume about how long you worked at a certain place or add skills that you don’t have, because the employer will know and it will completely ruin any chances of you getting the job.

Should I add my picture in my resume?

This is a frequently asked question and there is no right answer. If you are applying for a modelling or acting job, then you definitely should add your picture, however, in most cases it is not obligatory to add your picture in your CV, especially if you’re applying for a job in the United States, Ireland, or the United Kingdom. This is to make sure that your selection is in no way related to your physical appearance. If you choose to add a photo on your resume, then here are a few tips you need to know:

  1. Dress formally.

  2. Plain background.

  3. Do not add a selfie as your photo.

  4. Keep the photo small.
