How to Conduct a Content Analysis

What is a Content Analysis?

Content analysis is a research method for making repeatable and true assumptions from textual data by interpreting and coding it. Qualitative data is turned into quantitative data by systematically analyzing types of texts, words, or themes.

What is the Purpose of a Content Analysis?

Transform a large amount of text into a highly organized and concise summary of key results.

Content analysis is used by researchers to learn about the purposes, messages, and consequences of communication content. They may also draw conclusions about the authors and audiences of the texts they study.

It is used to find and measure the existence of particular words, ideas, themes, phrases, films, transcripts, audio recordings, characters, or sentences in texts or collections of texts.

Basic Steps to Conducting a Content Analysis

  1. Identify and familiarize yourself with the content that will be analyzed.

Read and reread the text many times to become acquainted with the content. This step allows you to get a sense of the text as a whole, so you can start formulating an idea of what the key points are. Then, using coding units, you can start breaking down the data into smaller chunks while still maintaining the central meaning.

  1. Identify the coding units

A code can be thought of as a label, a name that exactly describes what the particular conceded meaning unit is about. Codes are usually one or two words long and make it easier to identify connections between meaning units.

  1. Analyze the data by applying the coding units into categories

Apply the coding units to organize the data into categories; a category is created by grouping codes that are linked to one another in terms of content or meaning. It's crucial to search for commonalities and discrepancies in how people say things, as well as any potential inconsistencies.

  1. Make sure it is Valid and Reliable

The next step is to put the codes that have been created to the test. Validation of the codes is needed to ensure their reliability. The code must be checked to ensure that it is measuring what it claims to be measuring and that the findings are accurate.

The evaluation and validation of the sample chosen for the study are referred to as sampling validity. Semantic validity tests decide if the various phrases or terms that make up a category have identical meanings and whether they all belong to the same category.

Data reliability must be verified to decide whether the data is accurate, which ensures that it must remain consistent during the measurement process.

  1. Analyze and Conclude

Once all the steps are done, the information gathered in the content analysis is analyzed for correlations and assumptions.

Several sets of information will be organized and accessible as files after the analysis are completed. This must be delivered in a report format that the receiver can easily comprehend.

When the units are small, content analysis can yield extremely simple results. When units are broad and results can be compared to audience study findings, content analysis findings become even more important.
