How to Find a Job as an Undergraduate

Finding a job as an undergraduate is tough, you are still young, you are committed to your university, and have little to no experience, however, it is not impossible. Companies are looking for people who are available and whose work is their number one priority, so knowing that undergraduates will be committed to their universities, and might need days off during their exams period is not very encouraging to hire them, nevertheless, some companies do, so the chances of finding a job before graduating, while not very high, are pretty good.

  1. Customer service agencies.

The call center industry is the highest undergraduate-hiring industry, especially in Egypt. Call centers do not require any experience, will not ask for a CV, and offer good salaries considering you’re an undergraduate, and are available in multiple languages. The more languages you speak, the higher the salary. The most known call center agencies in Egypt are Teleperformance, Centro Global Solutions, and Concentrix. There are other agencies that you can also apply for, such as Vodafone, Etisalat, Raya, and so on. You can apply for any of these by searching “e.g. Vodafone UK hiring” on Facebook, and you will get multiple links posted by HR’s looking for recruits, you can fill in an application and an HR will give you a call within a couple of days to follow up with you.

  1. Create a CV.

If customer service is not for you, then you will need to start looking for other jobs on different platforms, however, to give yourself a chance to get accepted in any other job, you will have to create a CV. The first thing to do is to pick a template online, the biggest mistake when it comes to creating a CV is listing a bunch of things about yourself in a word document and calling it a CV. To look professional, look for CV templates online, and fill in your information in it. You can find free templates here: https://www.resumenerd.com/dashboard

As an undergraduate, it is important that you list all your working experience, since companies are looking for people with experience, even if your experience is not very long, it is worth mentioning. Any volunteer work, internships, unpaid jobs, or student activities are also worth mentioning in your CV.

  1. Think of your options

If customer service is not an option, what are you looking for? When looking for a job as an undergraduate, you have to be realistic and face the fact that your options are limited. Make a list of things you are interested in and think of how you can get a job in them, however, do not set high expectations, such as landing a business development executive position at an international company. Be down to earth and realistic about your experience in relation to the job you are looking for. You should also think about whether or not you are open to taking unpaid internships or jobs, are you just looking for experience or do you need the money too? Some jobs you can consider to apply for as an undergraduate are:

  • Teacher

  • Integration teacher

  • Intern in your field

  • Writing/ editorial jobs

  • Telemarketing

  • Outdoor salesperson

  1. Wuzzuf & LinkedIn

During your job searching process, Wuzzuf and LinkedIn are your best friends. Once you decide what jobs you are interested in, go to Wuzzuf or LinkedIn (preferably Wuzzuf because LinkedIn is very professional and most job offers are for people higher in the hierarchy) and search for the job you are looking for. For example “KG teacher” or “marketing intern” or you can just type in “undergraduate” and go through the available job opportunities. You can also filter your results to “entry level” so that you don’t get job offers asking for a minimum 3 years of experience, for instance. You can easily create an account of wuzzuf here: https://wuzzuf.net/register

LinkedIn here: https://www.linkedin.com/signup

All you have to do is follow the steps, enter your information and upload your CV, then start applying for jobs right away. It is also preferable that you apply for as many jobs as possible because the likelihood of getting a reply or getting accepted is dim, so it is best that you apply for as many opportunities as you can to increase your chances of getting an offer.

  1. Facebook

Surprisingly, facebook is a great place to find jobs, especially for undergraduates. There are numerous groups on facebook for jobs for undergraduates where people are constantly posting job offers. You can also post about what job you are looking for and if someone has something available for you they can reply to you about it. However, be careful because some people are frauds and will post about fake jobs, so it's important that you ask about the job entity, and research about it to make sure it is legitimate before going for an interview.

  1. Be patient

Lastly, it is important that you remain patient and positive through this process. Finding a job as an undergraduate is not an easy task, and will take some time, but when you land a job that is perfect for you and that you enjoy, it will be worth it. Just keep looking and apply as much as you can, but stay patient and do not let the rejections make you feel bad about yourself. You are doing your best.
