How to Improve Your English Accent

Perfecting your accent is one of the hardest parts of speaking another language, however, with constant effort and practice, it is definitely a doable skill! Because we know how hard it can be to improve your accent, we gathered some of the most effective ways to work on your pronunciation and perfect it.

  1. Listen!

The most important thing to do when you are trying to perfect your accent is to learn to listen. Try to watch more movies or listen to more songs and really focus on the pronunciations, you can even pause and try to say a word or phrase the same way the actors did to see if you can imitate it. Another thing you can do is to play videos on Youtube in English and slow down the speed in order to properly listen to the pronunciation of words. If there is a specific word you don’t know how to pronounce, for example, you can search for its pronunciation on Youtube and slow it down to hear it properly, then say it yourself out loud multiple times until you can say it exactly the way it is pronounced.

  1. Listen to yourself.

Record yourself reading something out loud or maybe just introduce yourself or talk about something you love for a minute or two. Then, listen to the recording to point out what you need to work on. Do you have a problem with pronouncing the “th”? Do you confuse the “p” and “b”? Listen to yourself carefully to identify areas of improvement, and keep recording yourself for a while to notice improvements or extra areas that you need to work on.

  1. Teach yourself how to pronounce.

Speak slowly and notice how your tongue and lips move when you are talking. Watch videos online of people speaking English and try to observe how their lips and tongue move too, and then compare and try to imitate them. It is very important to take notice of how your lips speak words in order to alter it and perfect your accent.

  1. Talk to yourself.

Try to imagine a scenario where you are introducing yourself to someone or maybe asking for directions, talk to yourself out loud and focus on being slow and steady, don’t try to talk too quickly, just focus on pronouncing the words correctly. The more you practice talking out loud, the better your accent will gradually get by time. Remember: talking too quickly makes you seem nervous and doesn’t allow you time to think of what you want to say, so make sure to take it slow even when you are speaking to someone else, not just yourself.

  1. Talk to a native.

Try to talk to a native English speaker, or someone who is fluent in English. Talking to someone else who speaks the language will help you learn from their accent, and the person could also help you by correcting you in case you pronounce anything incorrectly!

  1. Read out loud.

One of the most effective ways to perfect your accent is reading out loud, whether you read a book, a magazine, or a random article from the internet, you will 1) be learning a lot of new vocabulary, and 2) you will notice if you pronounce anything incorrectly, and it will give you the time to pause and read it out a couple of times until you correct it, and if any word stops you, you can look it up and listen to how it is pronounced, and you will have learned a new word + how it is pronounced!
