How to Improve your English

A challenge that is very common nowadays to ESL (English second language) speakers, is how can someone improve their English speaking.

Tips on how to improve your English speaking skills:

  1. Watch a lot of English movies, shows, and videos

Just helps you to hear something right the first time. This is more appropriate for advanced students. It's good practice for listening to native English speakers so you don't have to keep asking them to repeat themselves. However, rather than watching live television It's preferable to use something you can replay over and over again to capture details you might have missed the first time around.

  1. Read a lot of English books

Now since traditional reading has evolved to online reading, a very good way to learn how to speak English the correct way is to use the online reading strategy. Look for any book available on the new e-reading and e-book services. One of the options is that the book can be read to you. Instead of you just reading out loud and not knowing the correct way to say particular words, you can read along.

  1. Listen to podcasts

Listening to English podcasts are a fantastic way to improve your English skills. You can not only listen to actual English conversations so you can hear how words are pronounced, but you can also pause or replay them whenever you want.

After listening to them, talk as if no one were watching.  You can pause the podcast at any time to return to words and phrases that are unfamiliar to you or that you believe are difficult to pronounce. Replay them until you think you have had enough.

Podcasts every English learner must listen to:

  1. Better @ English

  2. The English we speak

  3. Splendid speaking

  4. Elementary podcast

  5. English Class 101

  1. Record yourself

Recording yourself speaking in English is a huge benefit in

developing your English speaking skills! Hearing yourself on tape will expose things you didn't know, the positives and the negatives. On the other hand, you may be happily surprised to learn that your speaking abilities are far superior to your expectations!

  1. Focus on speaking fluently and not the grammar

It's okay if your sentences are not perfectly grammatically correct as a result of this. You will always sound better if you concentrate on speaking fluently rather than correctly. When you gain a better understanding of the grammar and word guidelines, you can fill in the blanks.

  1. Get comfortable talking to yourself

If you're still not sure if you're able to put your public speaking skills to the test, talk to yourself! Your English skills will develop the more you practice with yourself. Speaking English can be practiced by saying out loud what you're thinking or narrating your behaviour. For example, say out loud “I’m going to have pancakes for breakfast today”. You will improve your ability to translate your feelings into spoken words by talking to yourself. Since no one can hear your errors, training alone is also a low-pressure way to practice.

  1. Sing along to English songs

You will improve your English fluency by singing along to your favorite English songs. This is a tested, scientific language learning tool. Rap is a perfect way to develop your English skills since the words are always spoken in complete sentences. The rapper, on the other hand, uses a quicker tempo and a smoother rhythm. Some of the words may be difficult to understand, but if you can keep up with the rapper, you'll soon be fluent!

  1. Think in English

This can be done wherever, at any time. When you're thinking about your day or trying to decide what to order for dinner, try to use English. Try looking up words in an English-to-English dictionary. You'll never have to translate words in your native language this way. You'll find that thinking in English makes it easier to speak in English.

If you want to spend more time and invest more in learning English consider taking English courses, buying applications, or even private tutoring.
