How to Write a Cover Letter to Land Any Job Interview

What is a cover letter?

A cover letter, also known as a motivational letter or an application letter, is a one page

document written by you to further introduce yourself, your skills, and your experience, in addition to your resume, and to explain to the recruiters why you want this job and why you would be the perfect candidate for it.

In your cover letter, you want to start by writing the date, your name, number, address, and email address first. Then, address the person you are sending this cover letter to by either addressing them as “Sir/Madame” or “Mr..../Ms.../Mrs…”

A cover letter is usually four paragraphs long. In the first paragraph, start by introducing yourself and why you are interested in this job opportunity. Remember to keep it simple and straightforward, don’t cram too much information or else it will be hard to skim through and will probably be ignored.

In the next two paragraphs mention your previous work experience and what they added to you, you can mention how long you worked at these places and any achievements you have made. Try to relate these to why you are suitable for the job and include skills that are essential and relevant to the job you are applying for.

In the last paragraph conclude by stating that you think you are suitable for the job according to your past experience and that you look forward to hearing from them.

Things to keep in mind while writing your cover letter

  • Try to make your cover letter unique. Do not shy away from showing your positive characteristics in your letter, the more unique your letter is, the more it will stand out between all the other candidates’.

  • Do not include everything about yourself. Remember, the cover letter is just an introduction and mainly is about your personality and skills rather than all your previous experience. The recruiters will see all your experience in your resume anyway so try to add something different in your cover letter.

  • Make sure to show your passion for the job in your cover letter.

  • Do NOT lie! Don’t write any incorrect information in your cover letter because that can sabotage any chance of you getting accepted.

The following are some examples of cover letters to help guide and inspire you to write yours.
